By Leon C. Cusano
I felt I never needed a painting business website, expensive advertising, etc. to make money as a professional painter. Licensing/insurance, - that's just regular fluff written by somebody thats not even a painter. I just needed a market to go after. I did use local Yellow Pages advertising a few times and with good results. One year, some half-asleep employee screwed up my insertion ad.
And I wasn't the only one either that year. A customer of mine, that owned an investment company that I was painting for, had to go a whole year without an ad insertion because of the Yellow Pages ad reps bumbled it.
I never felt I needed insurance either because I was just a small, two-man company and we were careful. If you have employees, yeah, you might want to get some painters insurance. I don't even need an ad agency. I can find and get my own jobs free. Now when comercial work came along, I would buy insurance when I was required to, to get the job. Usually, I paid $250 down for half a million in coverage and the other half was paid when I completed the work. As far as being licensed, I ignored that too beause I was too busy to fool with it.
HERE'S A TIP: If you want to double or even triple your painting business this year, you do not need to work three times harder. Instead, you may want to focus on attracting better leads, increasing your average job size, and creating systems that bring in consistent work, like powerful, related add-on services and some commercial jobs.
Many painting contractors struggle because they don't know how to estimate jobs for maximum profits. That was my weak spot. Next to that, was staying busy during the holidays. I can show you quickly how I learned to fix both. I can show you how to keep a small, two or three-man crew busy all year long.
Next, focus on increasing your average income per job. Instead of selling only basic painting services, you could offer profitable upgrades such as drywall repair, pressure washing, and even wall papering, faux painting, etc.
Every customer who hires you is already willing to spend money on home improvement. By offering additional services, you can significantly increase the value of each project without finding new customers.
Another powerful growth strategy is improving your estimating and sales process. Respond quickly to inquiries and provide professional estimates. Homeowners often hire the first contractor who appears knowledgeable and trustworthy and being recommended by others.
Learn how to confidently explain the benefits of your services and clearly communicate the value you provide. A higher closing rate can dramatically increase revenue without spending more on advertising.
Don't overlook follow-up marketing. Stay in touch with past customers through email newsletters, seasonal promotions, and maintenance reminders. Many homeowners and businesses need additional painting work every few years. A simple follow-up system can generate repeat business at a fraction of the cost of acquiring new customers.
With the right marketing, sales systems, upselling techniques, and team development, doubling or tripling your painting business this year is an achievable goal. Focus on consistent improvement, and the growth will follow.
